About the book of Revelation ...
The Apocalypse, or Revelation of John, the last book of the Bible, is one of the most difficult to understand because it abounds in unfamiliar and extravagant symbolism. . . . .(It) is one of the chief characteristics of apocalyptic literature [which] enjoyed wide popularity in both Christian and Jewish circles from ca. 200 B.C. to A.D. 200.
This book contains an account of visions in symbolic and allegorical language borrowed extensively from the Old Testament. Whether or not these visions were real experiences of the author (John) or simply literary conventions employed by him is an open question.
This much is certain: symbolic descriptions are not to be taken as literal descriptions; nor is symbolism meant to be pictured realistically. (Taken from the Introduction to Revelation, the New American Bible, World Publishing Co., 1987)
Why study the Book of Revelation?
First there was the scare of Y2K. Then the Left Behind series of books and the ensuing movie. Now we have the NBC TV series “Revelations”. Whether or not you have read or seen any of these, the stories of what God has in store for humanity must cause us to think: “What is it all about and what are we as Catholic Christians to believe?”
This course will challenge some of the popular myths contained in the media representations, and at the same time will offer us some sound Catholic biblical teaching that will support our faith and our understanding of who Christ really is, and why we wait “in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”
What will the course entail?
While it is helpful to have had previous experience in Scripture study, it is not necessary. Our courses are designed to provide each participant with support materials and guides that are easy to follow. Taken one step at a time, the experienced speakers who are scripture scholars and teachers (both live and on videotape) provide wonderful insights and inspiration. The small group discussions help the material to come alive as table leaders allow for the sharing of both questions and reflections from every member. Finally, individual and group prayer will support the study and bring it to the level of faith to enhance each one’s relationship with Christ.
It does mean you will have to make a commitment, but the rewards are definitely worth it!
The registration fee of $20 covers the cost of books and materials as well as speakers’ stipends. Click here to register online.
