Mission Statement

Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity, a Christian-based organization, develops opportunities for all of God's people to act out their faith. By working in partnerships to eliminate substandard housing, we enable families and volunteers to improve lives. History of Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity (GCHFH)

Founded in 1987, Cleveland Habitat has completed nearly 160 homes in a number of Cleveland's poorest neighborhoods where nearly 50% of children grow up in households living in poverty, the need for affordable housing has never been greater.  Through the support of congregations, businesses, schools and civic groups, Habitat works with over 2,000 volunteers annually in Cleveland communities.

What is the application process?

Families must attend an introductory meeting, and complete a full application with interviews, including a description of their current living situation and why they are seeking assistance from Habitat.

What is required of Habitat homeowners?

Upon approval, families agree to invest 500 hours in house-building, volunteering and training, prior to moving into their new home.  Training includes budgeting, financial literacy, homeownership and maintenance.  Habitat Partner Families pay closing costs and purchase their finished home through an interest-free, no-profit mortgage.  Habitat also requires on-time payment and regular upkeep!

To qualify for a Habitat home, you must show:

  • Severe housing need
  • Willingness to Partner
  • Ability to Pay
