Your Sponsor must be a practicing, confirmed Catholic.  Sponsors are people who you can rely on during your faith journey. They should be people with a deep commitment to the Catholic faith. The Sponsor may be male or female and should be at least 16 years of age. The Sponsor may NOT be the Candidate’s mother or father but may be the Candidate’s baptismal godparent. The Candidate is encouraged to choose someone close by. 

The Sponsor should be a person who is prayerful, dependable, loving and comfortable sharing his or her faith with young people. The Sponsor represents the support and prayers of the entire Church. He/she will be the Candidate’s SPIRITUAL FRIEND. 


In this program, the following is asked of the Sponsor: 

• Accompany the Candidate to the Candidate & Sponsor Session II which is specifically designed for candidate/sponsor interaction
• Attend the Liturgy of Confirmation and present the Candidate during the Confirmation Rite portion of the liturgy.  
• Continue to be there for the Candidate and lend spiritual support after the Confirmation ceremony is over
• Discuss your choice of a Sponsor with your parents. Approach your potential Sponsor and explain your reasons for choosing him/her. Then, give your potential Sponsor a few days to think about your request. 

Christianity was never meant to be lived alone. We need one another. That is why at this point in our preparations for Confirmation, we look for a companion to journey with, a Sponsor.
