Sacraments

The celebration of the sacraments is central to the life of the parish. Therefore, St. Basil's offers a full program of sacramental preparation.

Baptism
All parents are required to attend a preparation class in anticipation of the Baptism of their first child. A team of parish staff and parishioners shares the theology and ritual of the sacrament and presents ideas for early religious training of the child. The class is offered three times a year. Please watch the Parish Bulletin for dates and time.

First Reconciliation and First Eucharist
The second grade religious education curriculum prepares children to celebrate First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Parents are required to attend one meeting in preparation for each sacrament. Older children who have not celebrated these sacraments are prepared privately. Arrangements for this preparation can be made with the Director of Religious Education.

Confirmation
Candidates are tenth grade students or beyond who have continually attended PSR or a Catholic high school. The preparation program consists of five sessions and a service project, which are in addition to regular religious education classes. There is an Information Night for potential candidates and their parents in the early Fall. Candidates are encouraged to freely choose to make this commitment to their faith, and may elect to postpone the celebration of this sacrament. Adults who have not been confirmed need to contact the Parish Office for information.

Matrimony
Couples who plan to be married at St. Basil are required to make an appointment with a parish priest or deacon at least six months prior to the proposed wedding date. The preparation process will be explained to the couple at that meeting, and the wedding date and time will be reserved in the Mass book.

As a part of the preparation process, there is a PRE-CANA DAY at the Parish Center each year. This is a one-day program designed to create an increased awareness of the responsibilities and realities of Christian married life. A team of married couples are the presenters.

Anointing of the Sick
This sacrament channels God's healing graces to comfort and strengthen the faith of the person who is ill. It is usually administered privately upon request when a person's health is impaired due to serious or chronic illness, old age, or before major surgery. In addition, this sacrament is communally celebrated twice each year at all weekend liturgies.
