About Cross Country
CYO cross country is distance running team sport for both boys and girls. It gives each child a chance to make new friends, exercise and have fun with other children from our parishes. No prior running experience is necessary.
Races (called meets) are held from late August through October. The races are held at various parks and schools throughout the diocese and Cleveland area. The courses are usually a combination of trails and fields. We do not run on tracks or roads. Everyone on the team gets to race. Nearly one thousand children from parishes throughout the diocese compete at various meets each week. The races are divided into groups based on grade level & gender.
Typically, St. Basil is the host for the CYO Brecksville meet each season, usually held in September. When a team is selected to be the host, that team is required to provide volunteers for the meet to help mark the course with cones or guide the runners at turning points. Participation from at least one adult is mandatory so that we can spread the duties of the meet to all parents. This is a ONE-TIME commitment during the season. Your help is what makes this meet one of the best during the season!
About St. Basil's program
We encourage your child to attend as many practices as possible, but we understand when you cannot attend practice due to other commitments. We begin practice with prayer, then we warm up, run, stretch, and sometimes we even play games. We do require that all runners sign in and out of each practice. Coaches run with the team at all practices, parents are welcome and encouraged to run at practice but are not required to participate.

Team traditions include a pasta dinner during the season, as well as the Cross Country Club run at the end of the season. The end of season banquet is held in October. More details on these events during the season.
