Volunteer Info

St Basil volunteers work on a construction team with volunteers from other parishes and faith traditions. Although St Basil parishioners have volunteered for Habitat for Humanity at different times over the years, our most recent partnership began in 2005 when parishioner Dick Schulte, a Habitat volunteer, was asked to gather volunteers from St Basil to build a home on Gaylord Ave. When Dick moved out of state, the work of building homes continued under new leadership.  Currently we are rehabbing older homes in Cleveland. Some of the homes were originally built by Habitat in its early years of operation, other homes are much older. Since 2005 the construction team that St Basil volunteers work with has built or rehabbed over 18 homes, and has cooperated with other Habitat construction teams on many other homes.

 Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are needed both in the field rehabbing homes and at the ReStore located on West 110 between Western Ave and Berea Rd. Volunteers are now asked to attend an Orientation Session at Habitat prior to working either on-site or at the Restore.  A schedule of orientation sessions can be found on the Habitat website: www.clevelandhabitat.org  At the orientation session the Volunteer Application Form and Liability Release Form can be completed.

If someone wants to volunteer on a one time basis, the Application Form and Liability Release form can be completed on site without attending an Orientation Session.

We welcome volunteers to work on-site with the construction team on a regular, semi-regular or occasional basis. Our regular work schedule is Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from about 9 am to 3 pm. Many volunteers choose one day a week to work, a few work more than one day a week, and several volunteers come when they can…once a month, or just a few times a year.

Although skilled volunteers are always a plus, semi skilled and enthusiastic handy people are encouraged to help as well. New skills can be learned by working with an experienced volunteer, while a skilled volunteer can work with minimal supervision.  Each construction team has a designated leader who directs the work, as needed, of all the volunteers.

 Age Restrictions

House construction sites

Because of OSHA and insurance considerations, volunteers working on a construction site must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers 17 years old and younger must be accompanied by an active participatory adult. Volunteers who are 16 and 17 years old are limited in the jobs they are allowed to do…they are not allowed to operate power tools (battery operated are okay) and they are not allowed to climb ladders.

Restore

The ReStore is a retail store that accepts donated furniture and building products (e.g. windows, doors, appliances, sinks, etc.). These items are then resold to the general public to help support GCHFH in its efforts to help build decent and affordable housing for low-middle income families. The ReStore is open five days a week, and you may sign up to volunteer any of these days. Tasks may include donation acquisition, merchandising, customer service, pricing, store organization, etc.

Restore volunteers must be at least 14 years old. Volunteers who are 17 years old and younger must be accompanied by an active participatory adult.  Volunteers are needed at the Restore Monday-Saturday from 9-4 pm.
